THE HIGH PRICE OF RICE.
POSITION IN AUCKLAND. CAUSE OF* THE SHORTAGE. The remarks made by Mr. C. H. Poole, M.P., in the House of Representatives on Wednesday on the subject of the high mice at which rice is selling at present ii; Auckland were referred to a prominent merchant yesterday. He stated that when the price of rice was gazetted at £3C a ton about four months auo there was only eight tons of rice in Auckland, and to import from Melbourne would cost £38 a ton. The Auckland merchants pointed out to the Board of Trade that in view of this the restriction was unreasonable. The board, however, refused to make any alteration", and the merchants promptly cancelled their orders,' and "sat tight.'' By the tim; the hoard realised that no stocks were coming in, and took action, the price had jumped considerably. If it had not interfered the .merchants would have been able to buy at £38 a ton. Now, owing to the "great shortage in tho East, rice was costing anything up to £73, according to quality. "The case illustrates the danger of the board interfering with the ordinary course of trade," concluded the merchant.
