AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. OPENING OF SPRING MEETING. DEAD-HEAT IN CUP. Fins weather prevailed on Saturday last for the opening day's racing in connection with the Spring Meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club, which attracted the largest crowd ever recorded on the suburban course, including a large contingent of H.M.S. New Zealand representatives. Everything was in order from a managerial viewpoint under the secretaryship of Mr. H. H. Hayr. while the different officials got through their duties in capable manner, though with such a vast crowd present it was impossible to expect the totalisator staff to, handle all the intended investments, and in consequence a large amount of money was shut out during the day. In the absence of Mr. F. W. Marks. Mr. H. Massey filled the position, as clerk of the scales.

Most of the races were keenly contested, the finish of the Avondale Cup being excitingly close, no less than five horses finishing within a length, while the judge was unable to separate Blue Cross and Alteration for first honours, and declared a ieadheat.

The Avondale Stakes- brought out a fine field of 13 youngsters, and a gTeat deal of interest was centred in the contest. The Wellington colt Bestir was sent out favourite, but the winner turned up in the Auckland gelding Landslide, who finished very quickly. The winner was bred in Australia by Mr. Ernest Alison, whose colours he carried on Saturday. At the conclusion of the race Landslide was paraded on the lawn, and decorated with the usual ribbon by Miss Foley. Signature registered a noteworthy performance by winning the double. Grey Lynn urdie K&co and the Hunters' Steeplechase, in the space of a couple of hours.

Several falls were recorded during the day. and F. Spcakman, rider of Sir John in the Hack and Hunters' Steeples, received injuries when that horse fell with him which necessitated hospital treatment. W. Ayres, rider of Depredation in the Avondale Cup, met with injury to his foot when that horse was forced on to the rails during the race, but nothing serious is reported to have befallen Downing when Archie fell with him during the running of the Henderson Handicap. Mr. A. W. Gordon, stipendiary steward, was in attendance, and had cause to hold an inquiry into some bumping which took place during the Hack Welter. the outcome of which was that Carmont. rider of Slowcoach, received a caution. The totalisator staff handled the sum of £46,191, compared with £28.477 10a for Cup Day last spring. The following are the details of the racing:—

Signature was handy to Nyassa in the early stages, but once the field settled down Southland ran to the front and had Nyassa, Signature and Jacaranda as his nearest attendants. Jacaranda "had, raced to the. lead before entering on the last round and he was in front of Signature down the b<ick, but was joined by the favourite before entering on the home stretoh. The favourite was inclined to swerve at the last obstacle, but once fairly over a good finish resulted in Signature gaining the verdict over Jacaranda by a neck.
