BURGLARY IN THE CITY.
QUEEN STREET PREMISES. TILL RIFLED OF ABOUT £17. SIMILAR SUM UNTOUCHED. A daring burglary was carried out in H. deal's tobacconist's shop, Queen Street, some time on Thursday night. It is understood that some £17 in notes and silver was stolen and that the thief, in his hurry, left a similar amount on the prt-mises. The burglary was revealed yesterday morning, when Mr. Cleal, on go.ng to business, found that the glass in the door facing Victoria Arcade had been smashed to atoms by a brick, which lay among the broken glass in the hairdressing saloon. Apparently the lock had been manipulated through the broken door. One of the two tills in the shop had been forced open and its contents, about £17, taken. A five-pound note, lying beneath a piece of paper was not discovered, and the saloon till, which contained a considerable amount of ca«h was also overlooked.
As the Victoria Arcade gates axe closed at nine o'clock each night, the thief must have either been .bidden in the shadows while the watchman made his inspection prior to locking up, or climbed over the gates afterwards.
