STORES AT AUCKLAND. HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES. Interesting facts relating to the coal supply for freezing works, which, he claimed, had been the most important factor in maintaining the prosperity of the Dominion during the war period, were stated by the managing director of the Far/nee' Freezing Company, Mr. P. J. Am bury, yesterday. He said it was obvious that the enormous quantity of perishable products held in the freezing stores for long periods would have been a total loss if the generators had not been kept going! Waste coal that was usually htaiit on the banks at the coal pita until the automatic stokers came into uk« waft utilised at- Southdown and Horotiu, hut this class of Waikato coal could not be kept as it was soft and rapidly deteriorated. The company had been afforded the opportunity of pn chasing several thousand tons of Creyinoulh slack, which could be stored for an indefinite period and this was kept as a reserve stock, Waikato coal being used, when available, for daily needs. In the event of a stoppage of the coal supply the company was in a position to keep its works running for four months on the accumulated coal stocks. Mr. Ambury added that he considered it imperative in the interests of the whole community that the hydro-electric resources of the Dominion should be developed without delay. The company had deemed it necessary to iristal a new plant at the Auckland works and provision was being made for the machinery to be converted from steam to an electrically-driven plant when the electric power was avail- , a file at cheap rates I
