THE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

HAMILTON, Thursday.

The final for the South Auckland golf championship was played to-day between H. T. Gillies (Hamilton) and S. Morpeth (Waihi), over a 36-hole course. At the end ot the first 18 holes Gillies was 1 up, but after the interval he did not play such good golf as in the morning, and the game ended at the thirty-third hole in Morpeth's favour, 1 up and 3 to play.

The first hole was halved in 4, and the second in 5. At the third, Gillies' second fell in the tough, and Morpeth holed out in 4. Gillies made a good drive in the fourth, but Morpeth landed in ' the rough. However, he made a good recovery, and won the hole in 4.

At the fifth, Gillies started badly, but a brilliant 15-foot putt gave him the hole in 4. Both players started the sixth with excellent drives, and Gillies, making a wonderful putt of 24 feet, holed, out in 3. making the game all square. At the seventh hole both players reached the edge of the green with the third, and Gillies, making his third successive long putt, this time 17 feet, won the hole in 5. making him 1 up. The eighth was halved in 4. and Morpeth won the ninth in 4. All square. The tenth and eleventh were halved in 4, Morpeth making a grand putt of 18 feet in the latter. In the twelfth, Morpeth feot in tho rough, and Gillies won in 4, making him 1 up. The thirteenth was halved in 5. At the fourteenth, Morpeth was bunkered in an unplayable position, and alter Gillies had holed in 3 Morpeth did not hole out. Gillies, 2 up. The fifteenth was halved, and Morpeth won the sixteenth in 4. Gillies, 1 up. The seventeenth and eighteenth were halved m 4, bote players putting from over 13 feet in tne seventeenth. At the close of the first round Gillies' card was 79, or 4 below bogey, and Morpeth was 84, plus the hole not holed out. After the adjournment the ninteenth was halved in 3. Going to the twentieth Gillies found the bunker, and Morpeth played just off the green in twto Gillies recovered well and the hole, was halved in 5. In the twenty-first Gillies made a medium opening drive, but in the fairway Morpeth was off the course. Gillies miss-hit his second, but his third took him within 2yds of the hole, and he holed out in 4. Gillies 2 up. In the twenty-second. Morpeth's opening drive landed 40yds ahead of Gillies, and the latter found the rough with his second. Morpeth nicely played his iron with hie second, and Gillies played a nice -mashie with his third on to the green, Morpeth winning in 5. Gillies 1 up. Morpeth topped his opening drive in the twenty-third, and failed to clear th* rough. Gillies pulled his drive into the rough,. Ho took a brassey for his second, but pulled ana again landed in the rough. He duffed his third and reached the green with his fourth. Gillies just missed his putt, and Morpeth holed in 5. All square. In the twenty- Morpeth's opening drive was good. but rather oft tno course. and Gillies' drive landed on the edge of the bunker. Morpeth cleared his second over the bunker and landed on tho green. Gillies missed his putt and Morpeth holed in 4 to Gillies' 5. Morpeth 1 up. At the twenty-fifth, a longhole. Morpeth played a beautiful drive against a strong wind, but Gillies landed in the rough. Morpeth played a fine brassey for his second. Gillies played his second short, and made a good third, but failed to reach the green. Morpeth, with his third, played a Sitch maahey, and holed in 5 to Gillies' 6. lorpeth. 2 up. Both players opened the twenty-sixth with grand drives, but. Gillies finished in the rough, and with his second just missed the , crest. Morpeth holed in 4 and Gillies did not hole out Morpeth, 3 up. In the twentyseventh. Gillies foozled his third, but his fourth went with two feet of the hole. Morpeth played a good third and won in 4, Gillies not holing. Morpeth, 4 up. At the twenty-eighth, both drove well. Morpefh holed out in 4, to Gillies' 3. Morpeth, 3 up. Both cleared the bunkers at the twentyninth. Morpeth's a particularly fine drive. Gillies sliced into the rough with his second and, missing twice, gave in the hoe. Morpeth, 4 up. At the thirtieth, Gillies holed in 3 to Morpeth'q 5. Morpeth. 3 up. The thirty-first was halved. At the thirty-second Gillies cleared the bunker, but the ball rolled back and put him in an awkward position. Morpeth holed in 3 Dorrrey 4.

Both opened the thirty-third well. Gillies played a grand second, and Morpeth topped his second into the rough. He reached the greet in 3 and the hole was halved, the mate .a finishing in Morpeth's favour. 4 up and 3 to play.

A feature of the match was the consistently fine drives of Morpeth, who, in nearly every instance, outdrove Gillies by 30 or 40 yards In. the morning both played perfect golf but m the afternoon Gillies was not up to his earlier form, while Morpeth seemed to regain it.

Th-i Medal Handicap resulted in a most popular win for Eggleston (Hamilton), whose card read: 92. 16-76. OFFICERS.

The Aucldand Golf Club played a. number of officer* from H.M.S. New Zealand yesterday at the club's course. Mangere. and, with the excerjtion of one game, members of the club won all the matches. The following are tho results of the games played during tho morning:—D. MacCormick defeated Lieu-tenant-Commander Spooner; W. Ralph defeated Midshipman Eykyn; R. Rainger defeated Midshipman M. Porter; R. Callender defeated Lieutenant Russell; N. Macintosh defeated Lieutenant Pinney; H. Horton defeated Lieutenant Hamill; A. M. Clark defeated Midshipman Evans; A. A. Martin defeated Surgeon Lieut.-Commander Devas; E. Horton defeated Lieut.-Commander Boyle; G. Foote defeated Midshipman Home; E. Bloomfield defeated Midshipman Huggard. Bloomfield defeated Captain Leggett. and Midshipman Huggard. To-morrow afternoon a mixed foursome will be played. The competitors will include ladies who are participating in the ladies' championship and several officers from H.M.S. New Zealand.

AUCKLAND LADIES' CLUB. The Auckland Ladies' Club played a challenge match against tho officers of the New Zealand on Wednesday afternoon, at the Middlemore course. Twelve games were played, and the Indies won. nine and finished all square in another. Details of the games are: Miss G. Gorrie defeated Commander B. H. Ramsay; Midshipman Porter defeated Miss S.
