THE KIWI AT SLING.
MESENTO OF NEW ZEALANDERS. [from Orß OWV CORRESFO>fI>E>rT.] t LONDON, July 25. In view of the early evaluation of the «imp at Sling,, which has been occupied by New Zealand troops since Jane, 1916, (i large emblem of a kiwi has recently been constructed on Beacon Hill, overlooking the plain, as a memento. The kiwi, like the white horse of Wiltshire, in cut out of the solid chalk, and showa up boldly in contrast to the surrounding green of the hillside. The Jesign was executed by Sergeant-Major Blenkame, of the Education Staff, from 'an exact sketch of the specimen kiwi in the British Museum. The site was surveyed and the design extended on to it by Sergeant V. T. Low, N.Z.E., also of the Education Staff. Owing to the various slopes of the hill It was a matter of great difficulty to give he device an active appearance. It was, in fact, necessary to distort the outline a jrood deal in order to obtain the proper perspective from the correct angle of observation, which is at Headquarters Road, near Y.M.C.A Corner. The body of the kiwi covers an area of 1} acres. The heioht, from the tup of the back, is 420 ft, the length of the bill is 160 ft, and the height of the letters ■'N.2." is 65ft. The smallest .possible rectangle to enclose the design" would embrace an area of -4 acres. It is hoped that with a little attention from time to time the emblem will last for all time.
