THE NEW REPRESENTATION.
NORTH GAINS THREE SEATS.
NUMBERS ON MAIN ROLLS.
The revision of electoral boundaries made j by the Representation Commissioners after the 1916 census will become effective at tiie nest elections. As a result of the greater increase in the European population, of the North, three new districts have been constituted in the North Island, and the new Parliament will comprise 45 representatives of the North Island and 31 representatives of the South Island. The three southern constituencies which have been extinguished are Selwyn, Grey, and Otago Central, while the new electorates in the; North Island are Roskill, Rotorua, and Manawatu.
There has been a general revision of electoral boundaries and the following table shows how the new main rolls for the various electorates compare with the rolls used for the Licensing Poll last April — North Island. The Rotorna Electorate. • The town of Roterua, which after being in the a /^, ng Electorate was ceded to the Bay of Plenty at the 1908 election and fi i" e i! : cars , lat «r rerted to Tauranga. is established as the headquarters of the new electorate bearing its name. The district extends to the borders of Cambridge, and includes Kihikihi and Okoroire, now in VYaikato ana Tauranga respectively. To the north-east it includes Whakatine and district, and stretches south to Taupo all now in the Bav of Plenty. ' The. ( 0] title Jof , the Tanmarunui electorate is dropped and that of Waitomo substituted with material changes in boundaries. Te Kniti, which has overshadowed the town of Taumarurui for actual voting power, becomes the centre of the Waitomo electorate, which stretches °? A « "m" 11 sea roast from the mouth ot the Marikopa river, now in Raglan to a point below Waitara, now 'in Taumarumui, a line east of the Main Trunk railway forming the eastern boundary \Vaimanno is remodelled in such "geographical manner that the electorate forms the middle of the North Island. Taumarunui borough supersedes Taihape as the headquarters of the electorate, which is also extended north-west of L©*> Taupo but is deprived of its present western coast area, transferred to Rangitikei Taihape passes from Waimarino into Kangitikei. hut Marten still remains the electorate's centre. Manawatu. newly created, embraces parts of Rangitikei and Gtaki as now constituted and Foxton figures as the headquarters. •In the South Island, Selw ? electorate m absorbed by Ashburton and Ellesmere, Grey is distributed between Buller and Motueka and Otago Central is shared by Wakatipu. Waitaki, Bruce and Ciutha On the evidence of the main rolls the Representation Commissioners' distribution of 45 members to the North Island and 31 to the South Island proves a most equitable arrangement, Th e North Island total averages 8104 voters per member, and the South Island 8089 voters per member. r
