NEW ZEALAND STAFF CORPS
OFFICERS FOR TRAINING. RECORDS OF WAR SERVICE. The officers who have been selected to go into training with a view to qualifying for vacancies on the New Zealand Staff Corps will report at Trentham next Tuesday. The officers chosen from Auckland I and the particulars of their service are as follows :— Captain G. Avey, M.C., belongs to Otahuhu. He left New Zealand with the original Rifle Brigade, and Berved in Egypt and France. He was taken prisoner near Warneton in July, 1917, and made several unsuccessful attempts to escape. He was released after the signing of the armistice. Captain W. W. Dove, M.C., resides at Remuera. He enlisted in the Samoan expedition as a sapper in the Signal Troop. On his return to New Zealand he was given a commission in the original Rifle Brigade, and with that unit served in Egypt and France. He took part in most of the engagements the New Zealanders were in, and was wounded three times. He returned last June, and for the last month or two has been on the district headquarters staff. Captain M. E. Johnson, M.C. and bar, left New Zealand in the Main Body as a trooper in the Auckland Mounted Rifles. He fought on Gallipoli and throughout the Palestine campaign, gaining his commission on the field. He resides at Henderson. Captain R. D. McFarland, M.C, served with the Second Battalion, Auckland Regiment leaving with the Eighth Reinforcements. He was through the principal engagements in France, and was wounded in the second Somme battle. He belongs to Mount Eden. Captain W. S. Colbeck served with the Second Battalion, Rifle Brigade, leaving New Zealand with the Twelfth Reinforcements. He saw a great deal of fighting, being mentioned in despatches, and returned to New Zealand last week by the Ayrshire. His home is in Remuera.
The career of Lieutenant R. S. Judson, V.C., D.C.M.. M.M., is well known. His record is the most remarkable in the Expeditionary Force. He won his three honours within a very short period, and afterwards was given a commission. Lieutenant J. Vincent holds the D.C.M. and the M.M. He fousrht with the First Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, and of course won his decorations as a ranker. He has a long service record. His home is in Christehnrch, hut for the last two months he has been employed on the group staff at Whangarei. Lieutenant Hassall G. de F. Garland, M.C., is a brother of Captain F. Garland' who was formerly stationed at Auckland.' He saw serv'ce in France and was awarded the Military Cross for meritorious work. He was wounded two years ago, and on his return to New Zealand was appointed - -de-camp to His Excellency the Governor-General. He was educated at Waitaki Boys' High School, Oamaru. Lieutenant A. Bongard, M.C., whose home is at Devonport, has not yet returned from active service.
