HOSTELS FOR PUPILS.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL PROPOSAL. DEPARTMENT REFUSES GRANT The refusal of the Education Department to make any financial grant to the Auckland Grammar Schools Board for the purpose of erecting boarding houses for pupils at the Boys' School and the Epsom Girls' School, -was commented on yesterday by the chairman cf the board, Professor A. P. W. Thomas.

Professor Thomas said the question of boarding accommodation and hostels had been brought before the board before the war, but the matter had been postponed during hostilities. It was an urgent" matter, and the board had hoped that with the advent of peace it would have been permitted to accomplish its aim Thera were many country boys and girls attending both the schools, and at present they were "boarding out." The number of pupils from the country was increasing each year, and the board was sure manv other country pupils would attend the" school were hosted erected.

c *' V. the case of the Epsom Girls' School,' said the chairman, "the action of the Department seems strange, for early this year an inspector visited the school and reported favourably on the special need for a hostel. It is quite a different matter for young girl* coming into the city, and being placed in any boardinghouse, than for a boy It is greatly to be regretted that the Government has not deemed it advisable, to act and this will be felt deeply by the board and the principals of the two schools.
