HOCKEY.

H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND MATCH. A hockey match between a team of officers lrom H.M.S. New Zealand and the Auckland representatives was piayed at the Remuora grounds yesterday afternoon. The ground was ;n excellent order, while th.6 weather conditions were perfect, and & fair crowd of spectators watched the game with considerable interest. In. the earlier stages tho local team had the setter of the piay, some smart work uv the :orward line keeping the visitors penncit in their own twenty-five tor some time. Tho defence proved equal to the task, however, and eventually the danger was removed, and several passing rushes by the naval men. started by Lieutenant C'uniitte. looked promising, but hard-hitting spoiled opportunities to score. The Auckland?™ were throwing the ball about nicely, and some good line-runs by Grice gamed a lot of ground. Continuing the attack. Mac ken broke through, beat the back, and shot a nice goat jo* Auckland. , The visitors controlled the ball better as the game progressed, and short passing between backs and forward-; became a feature of their play. The tackling of the locals was effective, however, and. supported by their backs, they were most frequently attacking. These two players made many fine openings, turning the ball past the local backs, and sweeping down into the circle. Quick defensive play by Ellison and Jarman frustrated shots at goal, while the Auckland forwards retaliated, and several shots at goal went wide. Mr. Eliot Davis, president of the Auckland Hockey Association, extended a welcome to the visitors to Remuera, and complimented them on the fast and clean exhibition of the game. Lieutenant Cunliffe suitably replied, and expressed the opinion thai it was the mo»> er bio game played during their cruise. SCHOOL REPS. V. WESLEY COLLEGE The primary school representatives played a match against the Wesley College fa'ttn grade team, a fast open game resulting in a win for the schoolboys by •> goals to mi. Nelson attacked strongly, and the Auckland goal was in danger, but Miss Stevens fielded and cleared cleverly. Nelson returned to the attack, and a nne passing rush carried play back into th" Auckland circle. Miss Baroett netting neatly for Nelson. Nelson, continued to attack, and Miss Cleary had a busy time at right back. Miss MacFarlane, in the left-half position, put in some useful intercepting, and saved Auckland several times, and play centred in midfield until half-time was called, with the scoxe in favour of Nelson by 1 goal to 0. On. resuming Nelson secured and carried well into the Auckland territory, where they held the Northern team lor the first half of the second spell. The Nelson backs were more clever and made good use if the ball, in feeding the forward line. Miss Barnett was very speedy on Nelsons left' wing, and. put in a fast run which soon had the Auckland backs on the defensive.. But Miss Walters fielded smartly, and a long hit gave the Northern team's forwards a. chance, which, ended in a corner against Nelson. Nelson cleared and ran down to the Auckland territory and. beating all opposition, carried play into the circle, where Miss Boyce registered a second goal for Nelson. Auckland rallied, but could not get past the Nelson backs, and play returned to Auckland until the whistle blew with the score: Nelson, 2; Auckland, 0. DOMINION LADIES' TOURNAMENT.
