GUILTY OF EMBEZZLEMENT.

MONEYS OF LOCAL BODIES. CLERK COMES UP FOR SENTENCE. The theft of sums of money totalling £278. from four local bodies, by whom he was jointly employed as clerk and secretary, was responsible for the appearance at the Supreme Court yesterday of a middle-aged man. named Frederick Ware (Mr. J. A. Hawkins). The accused had previously pleaded guilty to the charge and appeared for sentence. The four local bodies concerned were the Lower Mangapika Drainage Board, and the Karepuku, the Purawera, and the Wharepapa Road Boards.

Counsel said there were extenuating circumstances, and he asked that accused be either admitted to probation or ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. His Honor indicated that he might he prepared to adopt tho latter course, and lie remanded the accused until Saturday, and. in the. meantime, ordered reports to be obtained from the probation officer and the gaol surgeon regarding the accuseds physical and mental condition.
