SYSTEM OF GRANTS VARIED. BOARDS AND COMMITTEES. \ [BY TEUCBAPH-SPECIAL REPORTER.] "WELLINGTON. Wednesday. By the Education Amendment Bill, introduced to-day, it is proposed to vary »he method of making grants to. boards of education for general purposes, and in the assistance of school committees, by making the allocation an annual grant for general purposes of £750, increased by 3s 6d per head for every child in average attendance during the preceding year at any public school within the district. This is in addition to the general grant of 5s per head in average attendance. The end of the school committees' financial year is to be changed from December to February. The admission of pupils to secondary schools on a standard five certificate of competency is eliminated, leaving the standard six certificate alone. No junior scholarship ie to be tenable after the end of the year in which the holder has attained the age of 17 years, or 19 years in the case of a senior scholarship. The payment of a grant to technical colleges of £500 and £15 for each free pupil, and £10 for every other pupil in attendance, is to be authorised.

Power to grant scholarships to pupils taking agricultural, domestic, or other technical or industrial courses at any university or college affiliated with the New Zealand University, or at any agricultural college or other place of public instruction approved for the purpose by the Minister is conferred.
