THE SANDERS MEMORIAL.

UNVEILING AT TAKAPUNA.

NAVAL AND MILITARY BALL.

LUNCHEON FOR THE MEN.

The brilliant weather experienced yesterday gave added zest to all the functions, held in connection with the visit of Lord Jellicoe and the entertainment of the officers and men of H.M.S. New Zealand.

The chief event of the day was the ceremony of unveiling a memorial shield in the Takapuna school to the lata Lieu ten antCdfcimander W. E. Sanders, V.C., D.5.0., R.N. It was a memorable occasion, and the tribute of the admiral and of the Royal Navy to the gallant Takapuna boy who rose to such lofty heights of heroism in the service of his country against a piratical foe, will never be forgotten. The chief social function of the evening was the naval and military ball in the Town Hall. It was a brilliant gathering, at which the army officers and citizens of Auckland did everything possible to do honour to Lord and Lady Jellicoe and the officers of H.M.S. New Zealand.

At mid-day the' Navy League gave its first luncheon to the crew in the chibroom which has been established in one of the wharf sheds. About 350 warrant and petty officers and bluejackets attended. In the afternoon many of the men were taken for a trip to Papatoetoo, 30 motorcars being employed.
