HOCKEY.

WAIKATOiV. AUCKLAND.

The Waikato representative team this afternoon will try its strength against th« Auckland team, which pays Canterbury for the shield next Saturday. The gam* is attracting much attention, owing to the Country Association being the holder oi the Norden Challenge Cup, ond the visit- " ing eleven is reported to lie a strong one The game will be played at Renmera commencing tit 3.15. ' There has been a great deal of speculation as to the merit of the present Auckland team, and to-day's game will be the first in which the city eleven has been put to the test. The forwards have shown a great deal of improvement in practice and are a fast and nippy quintet. The halves may prove a weakness, but the fullbacks will ha to he reckoned with, and if at the top of their form, will bo difficult to heat The goalkeeper will play his ii.rt big game, and his play will he matched with interest. Messrs. Kent, Auckland, and Fabling, Waikato, will bar*' control of the game. NOTES AND COMMENTS. A';) collection cards, and proceeds, must be handed in today. The. Association Cup semi-finals will he played this afternoon. In the second grade, North Shore plays Ep". phony, and if successful, will win the grade and play off with the third grade winner for the cup next Saturday. Should Epiphany win, a second game will be played to-day, between Epiphany and Areta. as both those frame would then have equal points. In the third grade a tine game should result from the meeting of Wesley College and Gordon on No. 2 ground at two o'clock. Mount Eden has already won the founh grade, and will contest the cup match n.>..\' Saturday with the winner of to-day's match between Wesley College bud Mount Eden fifth grade beams. Mrs. E. Bernecker, of Hobsonville. has presented a fine cup for the fifth grade championship, this grade having hitherto been without a trophy. Somervell, by their win. become tho'rirst holders. The same lady has also presented a handsome little cup for the association fourth fifth grade competition. Nelson plays Canterbury for the shield : to-day at Christchuroh, arid the Auckland ' •earn will leave for the South by Wednes- j day's Main Trunk express to contest the! last shield match of the season against the winner nest Saturday. As a result of College Rifles having won ] the Areta-College Rifles match on a pro- j test, the last-named team has tied with j Mount Eden for the senior championship, | and a play-off has become necessary. This ! has been arranged for October 4. It i •ppears that some of the players concerned j have taken exception *.o this arrangement, j and consider the play-off should take place I this afternoon. It is difficult to see, I however, how the association could have done so in view of the representative match arranged for to day. Surely it will be admitted that ' the interests of the representative team are para- i mount, and scarcely anyone will j deny that a try-out for the shield team is I not only advisable but necessary. Seven ] of the representatives are playing in posi- j tions other than those in which they have ! figured during the season, and if they are to give of their best they are cer- I tainly entitled to a fair trial. It has been | suggested in some quarters that the senior i play-off could take place at two o'clock, ' -.ut since six of the representatives would ■ be engaged this must be considered out I of the question. Not only would the play- ' mg of six men in two games during the I afternoon nullify the representative match I as a test, but it would be an act of dis- j courtesy towards the visiting Waikato tpam. A little . forethought will some-i times show that the interests of indi- J vidual clubs must occasionally give way to larger issues. ' j Referring to the comment in Wednesday's Heeau) upon the action of the Arete ! Hockey Club in playing Brinsden and I Syims in the match against College Rifles i last Saturday, the secretary of the club, j Mr. S. England,-v-ites :-""Mv committee; has instructed ,r.e to explain the position, i Hallam and Robinson, two of our* pkivers, ! picked in the representative trial matches' j were unavoidably absent from out team.' We had no other alternative but to secure l outside services in the shape of Brinsden | and Syms. ©It is evident to any hockey player that tw o men who have been play- j ing football all the season are not as good \ as men who are playing at the top of ; their form. Moreover. Brinsden and Svms were old members of the club, who played the game for the sake of the game and had nothing to pain. 1 tlr'nk this will clear my club of any unsportsmanlike action." V PRIMARY SCHOOL NOTES. This morning an A and B trial match will take place, after which the selector will make known the representative team I to v.sit Hamilton, to meet the Waikato school representatives in a ."curtainraiser" to the Norden cup match on Saturday.
