FOOTBALL.

UNDER LEAGUE! RULES. ,

AUSTRALIA .Y. AUCKLAND.

MATCH THIS AFTERNOON. The final match in -Auckland against the Australian team will take place at the Domain this afternoon, whsn the Auckland representatives will play the visitors. The local team has been undergoing a con* 6?derable amount of training during the week, and it is said to be much faster than that which represented New Zealand last Saturday. A much closer game„ a| any rate, is expected. The teams are: — • AUSTRALIA. I Fullback : 0. Eraser. Threequarters : H. Horder, L. Cubitt, B. Norman, B. Vest. Five-eighths: A Holloway. Halfback: D* Thompson. Forwards : Front, W. Scbults. C. O'Donnell, F. Barge; second, J. Ksrwick, BTowjisend; back, J. Waikins. AUCKLAND. Fullback: W. Davidson. Threequarters: D. McGregor, A. McCly» mont, K. Ifwersen, G. Davidson. Halves: I. Stewart, W. Ghent. Forwards: Front. S. Walters, S. Lowry, W. Williams; second, H. Ayery, B. Mitchell back, N. Bass. Reserves: Backs, lies, Delgrosso; forwards J. Clarke, B. Herring. A "curtain raiser" will be played between the Maritime and Marist Brothers' senior teams. . k NOTES AND COMMENTS. The team selected to represent Auckland against Australia at the Domain this afternoon includes a number of new players, when compared with the New Zealand tliirteen. practiciillv an Auckland team, which was so- decisively defeated in the fourth test match last Saturday.' It is considered the present team is much faster, and apparently the selectors have been guided by the necessity of having more pace The selection of W. Davidson as fullback is regarded to' a largo extent as an expeiiment. Though .j he is reported to have shown very good form in Australia as a t hreequarter, his game against the Australians in the. third test match was not up to representative form. _ However, he is fast, knows the fame, "and is a good, kick with either foot, but is unreliable when on the defensive. I McClymont, who is playiiag inside threequarter, is regarded as one of the clever- ; •est backs in Auckland, and the rear- i guard will be considerably strengthened by Ms presence. G. Davidson has no doubt Seen selected on account of his sprinting abilities, and if he ig well fed by Hwerson ha should show to advantage. He scored five tries against Canterbury last season when playang in a similar position. No doubt he will be found opposite Horder. Ghent played a-. good game at half for Marist Brothers during the season, and justified his inclusion, j Mitchell was ope of the best forwards in i the old Grafton team, and has recently : been playing for Marist Brothers. He ! showed excellent form", and" altogether is ' a hardworking forward. He keeps close to the ball. and can pass well. '.The re- ! mainder of ' the team liave previously I played against the Australians. ! The Australian team will play Hawke's ' Bay, at Napier, on Saturday, September 27, and will conclude their tour with a l match against Wellington, at Wellington, on October 4. THE RUGBY GAME. COLLEGES V. BEPRESENTAXIVES. The principal attraction in Rugby football this afternoon will be the secondary schools v. under 20 representatives match, which will commence at Eden Park at three o'clock. Both teams are particularly strong, and a fast and s raterest J n2'fiarae should result. The proceeds of the match will.be- devoted to the players' accident fund that the union intends to establish' in the near future. * T i ".rtain raiser" *riH be the final I of the third grade championship between Parnell and Elierslie. * ■ , NOTES AND COMMENTS. I The display made by the Auckland re- < presentetjve team in the BanfmlyHShield at Wellington on Wednesday visa most disappointing, as many who saw them play against Taranaki at Eden Park on August 25 were confident, that they had more than an average chance of fifths the trophy Of. course this wa mainly based on the fact that Wellington had narrowly defeated Taraoaki fust previously, ail d, further the Auckland backs { worked so well together that they seemed to be a brilliant combination. When Taranaki played Wellington on September 6 they were only beaten bj? 18 points to 10, and on the whole it linked as though Auckland had a. great chance. Howev«they failed, and it is hard to account for their poor showing. They handled- the ban very badly throughout, and apparently did not display any of that brilliancy they showed here. Wellington has successfully defended th« shield agaitat half-a-dozen challengers this season, and when everything is consisted they must ne a great team. The North v. South Island match takes place at Wellington this afternoon, and * good game should eventuate, though an interprovmaal performance the North Island team should account fox the Sonifcern representatives. The teams selected
