WHARF LABOUR.

Sir,—The letter of N. Shorter in Thursday's Herald is palpably the proverbial "red herring'.' to draw the scent of the facts away from the reader. Mr. St. John is quite right, that ag nu>ny men may be seen standing, sitting, and looking on as are working, and some of the latter seem as if they were rehearsing the part of " Weary Willie." It is nothing short of a scandal, and the sooner these highlypaid slackers are galvanised into life or cleared out to make room for genuine workers the better for the country. Do these men realise that their lack of " go," and their senseless refusal to handle ship after ship on a flimsy pretext surely increases the cost of living, about, which they so constantly whine. The public are not asleep, and will protect themselves at the coming election by refusing to support those candidates who prof to champion labour, but practically block the only true road to prosperity, viz., energy, efficiency, and unlimited production. " Alert.
