AN ALLEGED MENACE.

DANGER TO PUBLIC HEALTH. _» GREY LYNN RUBBISH TIP. PROXIMITY TO SCHOOL. The continued use by the City Council of the rubbish tip in Garnet Road, Grey Lynn, has aroused the concern of the. Grey Lynn Schools' Committee in regard to possibility of the health of the children attending the Richmond West school becoming endangered during the coming summer owing to the existence of the tip in close proximity to the school. At the invitation of the chairman of the Grey Lynn Schools' Committee, Mr. C. Norgrove. a visit of inspection 'was paid to the tip yesterday by an official of the Health Department and a Her ALU representative. Mr. -Norgrove explained there was no objection to the tip being used for depositing tins and similar waste matter that, would not. create bad odours or breed disea.se, but crude household refuse was being deposited on the tip. the smell from which at times «as extremely offensive. The Richmond West school -was less tlian a quarter of a mile away, and the prevailing wind blew straight from the tip to the school. These facts were verified by the inspection made yesterday, though at the time of the visit only a slight, offensive odour was to be detected. There was. however, sufficient evidence, in the shape, of decaying vegetation and recent ly-deposited household garbage to warrant the Assumption that with the approach of hot weather the continued use of the tip as a. dumping ground for crude household refuse might endanger the health of the school children and of the residents in the locality. The tip has been in use for many years and was taken over by the City Council from the Grey Lynn Borough Council. It is stated that only dry innocuous rubbish is supposed to be deposited there and that any refuse, likely to prove offensive that is collected in the district, is supposed to be carted to the destructor.
