PAEROA IMPLEMENTS

PROPOSED LOAN OF £50,000. i DRAINAGE AND ROADING. SUPPORT FROM BUSINESS MEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEEOA. Wednesday. A special meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of. Commerce -was held last night to fully discuss the loan for £50,000 which the Borough Council proposes to raise. It is proposed, inter alia, to expend £38,000 on sewerage and drainage and £5000 on roading. If the loan is sanctioned by the ratepayers the council intends to spread the expenditure over a period of six years, while the security is eightpence in the £ over the whole of the borough on unimproved value, which is assessed at £100,000. The engineer advised that drainage is of primary importance, and is the first work of a permanent nature which should be undertaken. The drainage scheme is based on the most modern practice. The sewage will be put through. a complete bacteriological treatment for the purpose of purifying it. It is proposed to divide the borough into five areas, with five septic tanks and a pumping plant, while provision has been made for the storage of sewage during flood periods, when the effluent from tanks cannot be discharged into the river area. No. 4 area, being lowlying and swampy, cannot be drained by gravitation, so a pumping station is provided for, to which the sewage will gravitate, and from this point it will be lifted by a pump. An interesting feature of the proposal is that a modern patent pump Will be employed. This pump is made by a wellknown English firm, and its special feature is that it has an internal knife arrangement which can chop up any solid matter getting into the sewer, reducing it to a size that will easily pass through the pump. This makes it possible to do away with the objectionable necessity for screening sewage. In the other areas sewage will gravitate to the tanks, the effluent from which will flow into the Ohinemuri River.

After a vary full discussion, a motion was carried endorsing the preliminary proposals of the council as to the drainage loan. In the discussion on the roadway scheme several members questioned the sufficiency of the amount proposed to be spent on this important work and expressed the opinion that it ■would be greatly to the advantage of the borough if the sum "was substantially increased. A resolution was carried approving of the roading proposals as submitted and recommending that the amount be increased to £15,000. The principal work in connection _ with the proposed Domain improvements is the tarring and sanding of the main footways. Several members strongly advocated the erection of swimming baths and pointed out that there is a sufficient number of children attending the school to make the baths self-supporting. It was resolved that it be a- recommendation to the council when putting the loan proposals before the ratepayers to also take a poll on the question of providing a swimming pool. A motion was carried recommending to the Borough Council when allocating its loan expenditure to keep in mind the beautifying of the town. The loan proposals will be placed before the ratepayers as separate issues. At the conclusion of the meeting the members of the chamber were thanked by councillors present for their consideration land endorsement of the proposals.
