A SHIP FROM CYPRUS. An event of historical importance has occurred m tne Island of Cyprus. A wooden steamer of 230 tons called the Apostle Andrew was launched in July at Kyrenia, on the north coast of the island. Only two i vessels have boen built there in modern ; times. The other was a smaller schooner, which was. built early in the '80s. In classical times Cyprus possessed valuable forests of -wood which were well adapted for shin construction. All around the coast shipbuilding yards were busy turning out vessels for the Greek trades in the Mediter- i ranean. In 480 8.C.. when Xerxes was '< waging war against the Greeks his navy ■ comprised 970 ships which were built in and manned by natives of Cyprus. In re- ' cent years business has been restricted in the island, but now that a good government has been assured it is rapidly reviving. THE CITY OF WINCHESTER. The A. and A. steamer City of Winchester arrived from Now York yesterday moraine 1 and anchored in the stream for medical inspection. After being granted pratique she ; berthed at the King's Wharf to land the : Auckland portion of her cirgo. She left , New York on August 8 and arrived at Hor- ! folk the following day. At Norfolk sh& took ', ; in bunker coal and loaded 2750 tons for the i New Zealand Government. She sailed on j August 15 and cleared Panama on August I 22. Fine weather was experienced until last , Saturday, < when th« wind increased to a i j gale, varying from north-east to west-south-' J west. A high sea was encountered, which de- ' layed the vessel somewhat and constantly i flooded ner decks. Th«. gale Itisted two days, j j after which fine weather was experiencd no I port. The City of Winchester is owned by I i the ISllorman Lines. Ltd.. and is under I J charter to the A. and A. Line. She was built i by Palmer and Co., Newcastle, in 1917. She is a good all-round cargo steamer, being 1 speedy as well as a good cargo carrier. She is a 12-knot steamer and averaged 11.6 kno.s > from, Panama to Auckland. • Her cargo is - carried in six holds, two of which are insu-1 latea. Her /dead-weight carrying capacity is 11.250 tons. She is a cniiser stern vessel and ! is 485 a long 57ft 9in beam and 51ft 3in depth. Whan first built she ran between liondon- and New York. In April, 1918, she was torpedoed this day after she had left London, a hole 22ft by 42ft being torn in her tuu. She was able to reach Portland under her own steam. After temporary repairs she was taken to London amd then to the Tyne for permanent repair*, which took nearly five months. She ha« 5900 tons of general cargo for New Zealand, 1700 tons being for, Auckland. She la expected to sail on Saturday for Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin to pot out the balance. Captain E. G. Hoppina is in command and has with him the following officers;— Mr. C. Gregory-'-second. Mr. T. R, Davies: third. Mr. E Pblmer; chief .en crmeer, Mr. T. W. Kenyonsecond. Mr. T. Wood; third, Mr. B. G. Hamerton: fourth. Mr. G. Christie; fifth. Mr. A. C. Goodier: refrigerating engineer. Mr. C. Anderson.
