MILLIONS FOR RAILWAYS.
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSALS.
AID TO REPATRIATION. The New South Wales House of Assembly has passed several Bills authoricing the construction of railways sanctioned by the Public Works Committee. Money to build the lines is to be provided by the Commonwealth Government, on loan, as a special provision to assist in the general scheme for the repatriation of returned soldiers and sailors. The Commonwealth has agreed to lend the State a total of £8,774,843, to be expended in convenient instalments on approved railways and other works closely connected with the repatriation scheme. Mr. Fitzpal.riek (Treasurer) said that the Commonwealth Government had intimated that it was prepared to lend a total of £8,774,843 for purposes" associated with repatriation; for the building of railways, and the carrying out of certain other tasks, ail of which had a bearing on the repatriation of soldiers. The money has been made available solely for the purpose of enabling repatriation to be caried on effectively and satisfactorily. The determination of the proposals, added Mr. Fitzpatrick, has- been left in the iands of representatives of the New South Wales and Commonwealth Governments.
