SPORTING.

INTERPROVINCIAU GOSSIP. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN COEEESrONDENT.] HAWKE'S BAY. Monday. The racing establishment occupied years go by the late Percy Martin has been >urchaeed by S. Reid, the well-known lorseman, who intends setting up shortly s a trainer. Reid has had a fine career a a horseman, and, aided by the experinee gained with the Highd'en and Willams teams, should make his mark in •he new sphere. H. Jefferd's team at Ngatarawa are all loing well, and several are ready to race it any time. Vagabond, the New Zeaand Cup mount on whom has been booked o Hector Gray, is going along nicely, nd should be one of the favourite candilates in the big two-mile race. Tigritiya las been recommissioned after a short pell, and is very bright. This filly hould do well this year in open com>any. Makepiece is also going on nicely n his training. Jefferd will go o Avondale with the Absurd-Carmania illy, who is engaged in the Avondale Stakes. This youngster is very smart, tnd may pay her way on the trip. 'Other youngsters being prepared for early engagements are the Absurd-Elegy colt, and .wo colts by Demosthenes, one from Lady ; 'ecile and the other a half-brother to sweet Tipperary. marly is again in work, and shrewd udges are selecting this mare to make ;ood this year. She appears to be like nany others of the Hymettus breed :apable of being overdone on the. track. The Douglas team are all in splendid lealth, and reflect much credit on their oung trainer. The star of the stable is vlaioha, who is rapidly getting into high acing form, although the work so far Plotted to him would not point to his New Zealand Cup acceptance being taken seri>usly. He invariably finished in front of letaua in their sprinting tasks, but the )lack fellow has improved in his work of ate, and his chestnut relative was just n front of him recently at the end of i four-furlong go in 50s. The two-year-i'ds in the stable are doing well, Tropical -nd Sunny Smile being very forward. The atter is very robust, and gets more work han any of the others, but seems to thrive in it. Tropical may prove the better of he two. A hunter by Sylvia Park in the lame stable is a good sort, and may be leard of later on. The outside of the course proper was ipen one morning this week for fast work, md trainers seized the chance of sending .heir horses along. Chillies and Signysian •an a mile in 1m 525, the latter having nuch the worst of the weights. This halfirother to Tattoo is the best jumper seen )ut this season, and should make a name or himself over hurdles or across country is he has already had experience of both md has plenty of pace. Hindi and the Bliss colt in Gooseman's stable ran half a mile in 51s, the latter Deing in front at the finish. This chap nay be quite as*fast as his mother, but ne is a bit light-headed just yet. The New Zealand Cup candidate by Mystification was a little too good' for Mumble in a sprinting task, but the ;rey filly is improving and for most of the journey held her own. Guanaco and Parisian Diamond's halfsister, by Merry Moment, cut out a smart six furlongs in 1.20, Mountain Eagle being beaten off. The full brother to Mullingar in Chaafe's stable ran four furlongs in 535, doing it well. This is a good sort. All eyes were open when five two-year-olds and Statuette went out, some with colours up, for a three-furlong flutter. Statuette on the outside let the others get a break, but caught them in a few chains and easily beat them in 38s. Sunny Smile finished next, just in front of a hice chestnut in Donovan's stable. Tari and Makere set out for a sprint, the former showing to most advantage. The three-year-old, however, is a good sort and should make good this season, as Tari is very hard to beat on the tracks. Duigan's filly by AH Black—Blue River, i pleased the onlookers by the manner in ] which she moved in a short hurry-up. A big gelding in Ellingham's stable (by Sylvia Park out of a -sister to Moifaa), is fast coming into shape and should build into a fine horse. He has already shown ability to jump, and if he does not turnout a good-'un over country therein will lie the surprise. Already some good offers have Deen made for him, but Ellingham shakes lis head. The black two-year-old by Absurd, in Atlas White's stable, is growing into a ine horse, and though he may not come as hand early, he shows much promise. Sweet Corn's win at Marton did not surprise local sports, but few participated in the good dividend, as the old mare is considered by many to be too moody to punt on. Croesus is doing a fair amount of work, with trainer McCracken in the saddle, and in a sprint down the straight recently moved as freely as ever. In the si'.me stable are the full brothers- First Salute and Arch Salute. The former is a thorough little gentleman, and is looking and croing very well indeed. A. Adams has now taken service with McCracken. CANTERBURY. Monday. A lot of rain fell this week, and as a result of the soaking they received the Riccarton tracks are out of action for a few days. Work has been resumed, but the ground is still heavy. A few more days of fine weather should see it fast again. Mr. F. S. Rutherford's Flavus gelding Jingo was shipped north a few days ago. He is not a sound horse, and for that reason is hard to train on ordinary tracks. He will go into C. Morse's stable at Gisborne, where he wilj have the advantage of a beach to work on. Jingo is a speedy customer, and as most of his sire's progeny have improved with age he should do well this season if he becomes sound. Ihe four-year-old mare Helter Skelter (by Antagonist— Fleetfoot) has been retired from the training track, and she was shipped to Wellington this week to be mated with Treadmill. Helter Skelter is a very speedy galloper, but she has always been more or less unsound, and it has been found impossible to get her prepared ior a race. Mr. F. S. Easton's three-year-old colt Ameythas (by Demosthenes-Gold Treasure) arrived at Lyttelton by the Maori this morning and was taken on to Riccarton, where he is now an inmate of F. D. Jones' stable. He was brought from the north by ¥. Kliis. who walked the colt from Levin to Wellington, three days being occupied on a road journey of about 50 miles. Amvthas looks in good order, and he should soon be in fast work in view ot spring engagement.-. He was a good : performer last season, winning three races. Gay Lad was the medium of spirited backing for the New Zealand Cup this week. A good deal of money was secured about his chance in various parts of the Dominion. As a result he is now a strong favourite. He continues to get through plenty of useful work, and he looks well forward for spring engagements. B\ik Up has made a good recovery from the trouble in her face, and she has resumed sprinting. She is a smart galloper. The three-year-old Some Kid is hitting out in great style in his work, and he looks a certainty for a short race early in the season. Heathereote looks in fine 'order at present, and un appearances he should win good races. He has not been set any strenuous tasks', however, and it remains to* be seen whether he will hold his condition when he lias to stand up to some severe galloping.

WELLINGTON. Monday. The Waira-rapa Club recently invited applications for the position of starter, and Mr. P. K. Haley has been appointed to the position. The New Zealand Cup candidates, Mascot, Kilrush. and Rose Pink, are likely to meet in the Memorial Stakes at the Otaki meeting, which opens on Saturday next. Mascot has been doing a lot of useful work at Trentham, and her trainer is very pleased with her efforts.

The withdrawal of the Pateena from the Wellington run" will seriously affect several owners in these parts, who were relying on getting their horses to the Avondale meeting by boat. J. Lowe is trying to get a couple of horses to Wanganui by boat, but at the time of telegraphing the chances are not good. He will send Mascot, Chueronia, and Royal Exchange to the Otaki Meeting which opens on Saturday next. C. Pritchr-rd is walking Esperance, Matatua, and Dick to the Otaki Meeting. and the trio leave Trentham on Thursday next. Matata has been working very we I: ,-.t Trentham, and his trainer views" hi.- prospects hopefully. WANGANUI WEIGHTS. [by telegraph.—press associationf WELLINGTON, Monday.
