AUSTRALIA IN LONDON.
VALUE OF AGENCIES. I Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, j (Reed. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 3. As the question is one of policy ! between the Government of the Commonwealth and the various Australian States, the Agents-General do not care to discuss the proposal to transfer the work of the agencies to the Federal authority. Sir Peter McBride, Agent-General for Victoria, states that he will place his views before the Victorian Government during his forthcoming visit to Mel- ! bourne. There is a general feeling ! that the agencies do much for the ' peculiar interests of their respective States and that a Federal authority could not do. There are many diffij culties to be cleared away before the Commonwealth could undertake an : emigration policy that would satisfy j the special requirements of the in- ■ dividual States. It is pointed out i that Canada first started with a High Commissioner, but her experience ■ soon proved that the interests of the . i provinces were better served by the • j establishment of agents.
