SENATE AND PRESIDENT
FIGHT OVER THE TREATY.
MR. WILSON OPTIMISTIC. A. end N.Z. WASHINGTON, Sept. 3. i Senator Hitchcock, speaking in j the Senate, said that the real pur-1 pose of the Foreign Relations Committee in amending the peace treaty was to destroy it altogether. It would be suicidal for the United States to refuse ratification. Mr. Wilson has issued a statement that it is his belief that the treaty will be adopted without destructive reservations. He is about to leave on a speechmaking tour, and has disclosed his intention of showing that the senators are delaying Labour legislation, disrupting business, and preventing solution of the railway and cost of living problems. It is expected that the peace treaty will reach the Senate from the Foreign Relations Committee within a week.
