REFUSAL TO QUIT HOUSE.
ANZAC AVENUE TENANT.
COUNCIL TAKES LEGAL STEPS
A question as to whether the bailiffs had been put into a house in Anzac Avenue, and if so, why, was asked by Mr. M. J. Savage at last evening's meeting of the City Council. He said he understood the bailiffs were in possession, and that the tenant's _ goods and chattels had been thrown into the yard. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, said thti house in question was the only one in Anzac Avenue as to the acquisition of which, for the purposes of the formation of the new thoroughfare, no settlement had been arrived at. It had been taken by the council under the Public Works Act, but the occupiar had assumed the attitude that if he had to move out it was the council's duty to find him another place to go to. Mr. Entrican said he was not aware that the bailiffs had been put in.
The town clerk, Mr. H. W. Wilson, explained that about six months ago the council gave orders that the house referred to should be sold for removal. This was done, and it became necessary to give possession to the purchaser, who was now the owner. Three months had been occupied in the endeavour to do so but the tenant would not go out. An order had, therefore, been procured from the Court for his ejection.
