NORTHERN RAILWAYS.
PROGRESS OF THE WORK.
GREATER ACTIVITY SHOWN. FULL TUNNEL GANG. The work being done on the WaiotiraWaikiekie section of ♦" . North Auckland Main Trunk railway is dealt with in a report submitted to the Auckland Railways League by its special commissioner. The report states that the earthwork between the 17-mile peg, Tauaroa and Waiotira, has been nearly completed. Permanent rails are now laid within a-quarter of a mile of the Waiotira station. The earthwork between Waiotira and Waikiekie is going ahead at a great rate, and the engine should be at the railhead, 106-mile peg from Auckland, shortly. About 100 men are employed. The Waikiekie tunnel gang is working full handed in three shifts, and the first concrete lining has been started. Twenty men are employed on the Tokatohoe tunnel, which is being pierced at both ends, greater progress being now made than for years past. McCarroll's Gap should soon be reached. Better provision has been made for workers, wooden huts and cook-houses having been erected and change-houses provided a"i the tunnels. The Waiotira station is being built as an important 1 junction on the future Main Trunk system.
