DOUGLAS WINS PLAY-OFF.

FIRST ROUND FOR AMATEURS.

The golf championship meeting was continued to-day in fine weather, when the first round of the amateur championship was completed. The following are the results:—J. C. Bidwill beat E. Perry, 4 up and 3 to play; Kapi Tareha beat W. A. Humphreys, 1 up; R. M. George beat B. McEwan, 4 and 3; F. C. Fryer beat F. Trice, 7 and 5; S. Turner beat A. A. Stichbury, 2 up; H. E. Crosse beat R. D. Kelly, 6 and 5; A. O. Wellwood beat L. C. Hales, 1 up ; D." MacCormick beat W. Colbeck, 6 and 4; R. S. Rainger beat W. E. Knight, 2 and 1; I. Saunders beat H. P. Blundell, 5 and 4- S. Morpeth beat M. G. Luxford, 7 and 5; W. O'Callaghan beat W. L. Fitzherbert, 4 and 3; H. W. Kelly beat R. C. Kirk, 2 and 1; K. D. Duncan beat H. J. Smith, 3 and 1; A. D- S. Duncan beat C. E. Kusabs, 1 up; H. B. Dusk beat H. G. Da vies, 7 and 6. The tie in the open championship between S. Morpeth (Waihi) and E. SDouglas (professional) was played off over 18 holes, and resulted in a win for the present holder of the championship, E. S. Douglas. The scores for the round were: E. S. Douglas, 82; S. Morpeth, 85.

In the afternoon the handicap bogey match was played, but as the majority of the players preferred to watch the play-off in the open championship, 'very few cards were handed in. The competition was won by Kapi Tareha, who finished 1 up on bogey from scratch, a very fine performance. The tournament will be continued tomorrow, when the second round of the amateur championship will be played. J. C. Bidwill plays Kapi Tareha, F. C. Fryer plays R. M. George. H. E. Crosse plays S. Turner, A. 0. Wellwood plays D. MacCormick. R. G. Rainger plavs W. O'Callaghan, Imlay Saunders plavs H. W. Kelly, K. D. Duncan plava A. D. S. Duncan, S- Morpeth plays H. B. Lusk. The first round of the professional matches will be played in the morning, when E. S. Douglas plays W. McEwan.
