AN OVERCROWDED SCHOOL.
COMPLAINTS FROM ELLERSLIE
A deputation from the EUerslie School Committee 'waited on the Education Board yesterday with reference to several points in connection with school improvements. The most urgent of these was the overcrowding of the infant department. The inspector's last report had not been favourable, and this was largely due to the fact that, the teacher? were working under great difficulties. The capacity of the school was 100 pupils, but there were 160 en roll, and a probationer was requirea. The main school itself was also understaffed and overcrowded, and an extra teacher was required. The opening of the Green Lane fide, school would greatly relieve the position, but another teacher would be required during the summer months before the other school was built.
The chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, sai 1 in reply that the maximum number ■' f teachers had been appointed for the year and another probationer could not be sup plied without depleting tile, staff of some other city school. There was no hope of one being appointed before the end of the. year. The main school would be relieved shortly with regard to floor space, but the staffing had been fixed. In reply to a question a? to the improvement of the infant sciool ground, the chairman promised the board's architect would visit the school, and advise the committee on the matter.
