GEN. SMUTS, PRIME MINISTER A. and N.Z. PRETORIA. Aug. 31. General Jan C. Smuts succeeds the late General Louis Botha as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa. General Botha's funeral was attended by thousands from all parts of the Union, and thousands of wreaths were sent. The King was represented by Captain Stanley, Imperial secretary. Mrs. Botha and her relatives were present, and also the whole Ministry, who marched in the cortege three miles to the cemetery. An impressive lead was given by General? Van Derventer and Brits mounted on huge chargers. The King cabled his profound regret at the death of General Botha, and said : " The Empire mourns the loss of a chivalrous soldier and a hiTh-mindcrl statesman. The Government will miss his wise counsel and guidance." Mr. Lloyd George's message says: " The Empire mourns the loss of one of its greatest citizens."
