WELLINGTON, Monday.

A conference of representatives of school committees in various parts of the Dominion opened this afternoon. Mr. J. A.' Nash, M.P., presided. The chairman said he considered that education.. had been starved. There* ware cries from all quarters for new schools. They had been able to find the money for the-war—why should they- not be able to find money .for the purposes of education He moved that, with a view to promoting the general efficiency of primary education in the Dominion", the Government be urged to increase the annual education grant,to at least- £3,000,000;, that adequate salaries be paid to school ■teachers in keeping with the importance of the profession, aind that greater inducements be.given to young people 'to take up the profession of school teaching. The resolutions were carried.

A remit was carried asking the Government 'to make >it mandatory upon the board to submit in its order of reference the names of all applicants capable of filling a position sought, and' to amend the law •to prohibit appointment by transfer except where such is necessary by reason of ' there being no response to repeated advertisements of the vacancy. It was decided that a federation of school committees' associations be formed. The following resolutions were carried : —"That an additional capitation allowance of 2s, based. on, the average roll number, should be made by the Department for incidental' expenses to school committees"; "that the Government should supply all primary school books and requisites free"; "that no concessions or subsidies be granted any private schools."
