BOROUGH IMPROVEMENTS.
AN EXTENSIVE SCHEME.
EXPENDITURE OF £40,000. A comprehensive scheme of improvements is about to be undertaken by the Pnkekohe Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. O. K. Laurie, stated yesterday that reports and estimates were being obtained for a scheme of improvements and extensions to public services that would probably cost about £40,000. It was intended ' to carry out extensive street works, and ; a metal quarry was being acquired close I to the town, from which it was hoped i an abundant sunply of good roading mate- j rial would be obtainable. Previously metal had been brought by rail from Auckland, ' but lack of railway facilities had shut off , this source of supply. Plans had also been, prepared for the | installation of a drainage system that i would cost approximately £10,000. Diffi- j culty had been experienced in finding a suitable method of dealing with the ef- ! fluent from the septic tank, but it was ; thought that thin had now been overcome. Provision was also to be made for the erection of a town hall at a cost of about £4500, and arrangements were in train for the adoption of an important electrical scheme in which the Franklin County Council would be asked to co-operate with , | the borcugh. * ' i The existing electrical installation was I now being taxed to its utmost capacity, ' and further applications were being re- i ceived daily for current, rendering an extension of the plant a matter of urgency. In the circumstances it Was considered desirable that a. plant should be installed that would be capable of supplying current to outlying districts within a radius of about ten miles from the borough. Tht Mayor added that it was intended to push ahead with the electrical scheme, and have it completed, if possible, before next winter.
