TAKAPUNA TEAMS
REDUCTION IN TIME-TABLE.
RESIDENTS' DISSATISFACTION
The increases that have been made by the Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company in the steamer fares, and the alterations in the time-table, -which take effect to-day, formed the subject of a lengthy telegram that was sent «>n Saturday to Mr. A. Hams, M.P., by the Takapuna Residents and Ratepayers' Association. Reference is made in the telegram to the increases that recently were made in the through fares, and to the refusal of the Borough Council to consent to the proposed increase in tram fares, It is stated that the service that has been run for eight years has at short notice bees reduced to the minimum permitted in the Order-in-Council, and that the alteration "is arranged in such a manner as to- inflict the maximum inconvenience to the public." It is submitted that the curtailment is a breach of the legal duty imposed by the provisions of the Order-in-Oouncil " to conduct the undertaking in a manner conducive to the public convenience, ' and **" to secure to the public the full benefit oic the" tramway." Mr. Harris is asked to urge the Minister for Public Works to interfere immediately to enforce the restoration of the former service pending further inquiry, and also to obtain the opinion of the Solicitor-General as to whether the company is not obliged by the conditions of the Order-in-Council ta maintain the present service, although in excess of the minimum time-table, provided the public convenience demands it. A public meeting to discuss the matter will be held at Takapuna to-morrow evening.
