PROGRESS OF TUNNEL WORK

WELLINGTON. Saturday.

An assurance has been received by Mr. W. T. Jennings, member for Taamarunui, that there is no justification for the existing impression that the construction of the line from Okahukura to Olaura has not been authorised. The chief engineer to the Public Works Department has assured Mr. Jennings that he has given instructions to the district engineer at Taumarunai to employ as many men as he can to push on with tthe work. The authorisation is actually four years old. Mr. Holmes further assured Mr. Jennings that the construction of the Ohura tunnel was proceeding rapidly, large numbers of returned soldiers having been engaged there recently.
