DAVIS CUP TIE.
ENGLAND DEFEATS FRANCE. GREAT PLAY WITNESSED. A, and N.Z. LONDON. Aug. 27. In the preliminary tie for the Davis Cup, England defeated France. Kingscote defeated Gobert, 6—4, 6—4, 7—5. Davson defeated Laurentz. Correspondents are unanimous that Kingscote *played the best game in his life. He played marvellously accurate passing shots, especially backhand. Decugis declared that it was the finest exhibition of tennis he had witnessed since Winding's best days. In the earlier heats England beat South Africa, and France beat Belgium. The English teaSh will now voyage to Australia to play the challenge round in Sydney against Australia and New Zealand, the holders of the cup.
