SCHOOL ESSAY COMPETITION.

..o» ■ ' PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. Prizes won in an essay competition held in the Auckland city schools were presented to the successful scholars yesterday. The subject was an illustrated lecture given on April 1 by Miss Mildred L. Clemens, of San Francisco, on the Hawaiian Islands and the Yosemite Valley. The lecture was a. demonstration of the utility of moving pictures as a means of illustrate ' ing "lessons in certain subjects, regarding which the Education Board has taken action. Mr. H. 8. W. King, a member of the Education Board, offered six prizes for competition among the children. Sixty essays were sent in, the first prize being awarded to Winnie Haydon, of the Mount Roskill School, the otheT successful competitors being Jubal Fleming, Edendale; Gordon Smithson, Grey Lynn Myrtle Magee, Isabelle Hunter, and Mavis Gustafsson, Pamell. As Miss Clemens is a relative of "Mark Twain," the books selected an prizes were copies of '* Tom Sawyer," bearing Miss Clemens' autograph and a motto, and the Education Board's ! seal. The prizes were presented to the recipients at the various schools, in the presence of fifth and sixth standard pupils. Mr. King was accompanied by Mrs. F. E. Baume, who presented the prizes on his behalf, and Messrs. J. P. Penning and G. W. Murray, members of the board, and all delivered short addresses. Mr. Peat, chairman of the Mount Roskill School Committee, and Mr. Knight, chairman of the Parnell committee, also attended. It was explained that the cclay in presentation was due to the fart that owing to war conditions the books bad to* be obtained from America.
