A letter was received from the city en- ■ gineer, stating that the question of pro- ' viding new electric street lighting for | Newmarket was being considered, > In reply to a communication from the .'council regarding a proposed tram service [ t from Newmarket' to the 'foot of Queen .Street, via .Symonds Street, the general > manager, Mr. 3. J. a Waßtlate, notified that. \ the matter was being taken in hand. . A reply to the council's request for an * overhead bridge at the 'Victoria Crescent > railway crossing was received from the [ Raflway Department, The Department i stated that its financial ob'.igat.one were . I considerable, and local bodies should be tj prepared to pay portion of the cost of erection. The council decided to follow 6 the practice of other local, bodies- in the i: matter of railway' bridge construction. An application from.- Campbell '.and , TEbrehfried, Ltd., for pernKSsion to con- - struct a 40ft roadway between New Street a and George Street, was granted. There i was some discussion as to whether the width of the road should be 49ft, bat it was decided that the ro?d would bo in the best interests of the borough. BIRKENHEAD. The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr, J. 4 P McPhail. Messrs. E. C. Walton, R. a Tsvior, A. Hadfield, E. Boardman, J. B. i McVhail, R. Webb, P. G. Backhaese, A. a E. Wood, and E. G. Skeates. fc The audited balance-sheet was .adopted, the sole "tag" being that. .the 'Mayor's f honorarium had been increased during his 3 term of office, contrary to law.
