GRAMMAR SCHOOL JUBILEE.

-♦—i The jubilee of the Auckland Grammar School is more than an educational milestone. It is an event in the social life of the community which must command the interest of every good citizen. The Grammar School has indeed a brilliant scholastic record, which alone would place it high among the institutions of which Auckland is proud, but that is not its chief distinction. For half a century it has been moulding the character of the youth of Auckland, and all who know the Grammar School tradition will realise that in this respect alone it has done : an incalculably great public service. Successive generations of Auck- i landers have studied with'n the walls of the school, but they have absorbed something infinitely more • precious than knowledge as they learned to despise falsehood and deceit, and to esteem truthfulness and ' candour above all things. The moral ' tone of the Grammar School has always been high, and at no stage '■ in its history has it failed to place ' before its pupils an ideal of simple : and unaffected manliness which ■ served them well in later life. This : is still the bond of sympathy be- ' tween all "old boys." They may i be in very different social stations, • but there is not one who does not cherish a code of honour learned in the classrooms and playground, and never forgotten. Principally because the Grammar School has inculcated the civic virtues which are the basis of all true progress, it has a unique claim upon the sympathy and gratitude of Aucklanders. All will join in wishing it an everexpanding sphere of usefulness as a great centre of secondary education, , and all will wish to declare at this i time their confidence that the high traditions of the school are safe in ' the hands of the present headmaster and staff i
