NORTH SHORE TELEPHONE.
. FEE FOR COMMUNICATION. FIXED BATE TO BE CHARGED. The Auckland-North Shore telephone service is the subject of a letter from the Postmaster-General, Sir Joseph Ward, to Mr. A. Harris, M.P. The Minister states: " The manufacture of the submarine cable to be laid across the Waitemata Harbour has been delayed owing to war conditions. Every effort is being made to have the cable in readiness for the introduction of the automatic telephone system in the Auckland area. Under normal conditions the introduction of the system cannot, at the earliest, take place for 18 months yet. in connection with the introduction of the automatic system it has been decided to charge a fixed inter-communication rate between Devonport and Auckland for those subscribers who may care to pay it in place of the individual toll fees."
