COMPENSATION IN ASIA

The Popolo Romano states that a settlement of the Adriatic end other Italian peace problems has been reached. Italy agrees that Fiume. Zara, and Sebenico shall be free < cities, and that the port of Fiume shall be nationalised. Italy also ./ : abandons all claim to the Dodeca--'' nese and Smyrna. Italy in retur/ shall receive Aidin, Konia, Adalia, J and a triangle of Asia Minor, includ- j ing the Meander Valley. J If the settlement of the Italian claims is as reported by the Popolo Romano many difficulties will bo solved. The internationalisation of the Port of Fiume will provide an outlet to the sea, for the land-girt States of Austria,- Hungary, and Czecho-Slovakia. Zara and Sebenico are ports on the Dalmatian coast, a.id Italian claims to them nave been, strenuously opposed by the Jugoslavs. The Dodecanese are a group of islands in the JEgcan Sea, which were occupied by Italy in her war against Turkey in 1911 and have been retained by her since, although the population is predominantly Greek. The mandate to Italy foreshadowed in Asia comprises a portion of the southwestern hinterland of Asia "Miner.
