BOROUGH COUNCILS.

MOUNT EDEN. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening; the Mayor, Mr. C. Hudson, presiding. There -were also present: Messrs. E. H. Potter, J. P. Hooton, L. JoH, W. J. Hammill, G. L. Taylor, T. T. Garland, T. McNab, J. Smith, A. M. Bryden, and W. Wbolley.

The Mayor reported that £4000 worth of debentures for the drainage loan had been placed at 54 per cent. It was necessary, he said, that the drainage work should be proceeded with, more than had beer, the case in the past. It was intended to let a large contract to the amount of £3000 or £4000, and plans were being prepared for the purpose by the engineer. It was not proposed to cease letting small contracts, but to carry ouffc the work with greater expedition ii was necessary to let some of the work on & comprehensive scale.

A letter was received from the Mount Albert Borough Council agreeing to the ; proposed that the cost of clearing the soakhole in King Edward Street be divided j equally between Mount Eden and Mount Albert Councils. In reply to a complaint by the health authorities taat the borough s refuse tip had not been daily covered with soil and recommending shat the council should take into consideration the installation of a destructor, it was decided to invite the health officer to inspect the tip, the Mayor remarking that he had frequently visited it and had always found it in a satisfactory condition. A number of recommendations by the Domain Committee regarding improvements to Mount Eden were approved. The engineer reported that he had interviewed the Mayor of Mount Albert regarding a combined scheme for the drainage of Mount Eden and Mount Albert Boroughs. The Mount Albert Council was investigating a proposal submitted by him about two years ago, and would approach the Mount Eden Council with a view to combined action being taken when the investigations had been completed. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. It was decided to arrange a conference with representatives of the 'City Council and the Newmarket Borough Council on Monday evening next to discuss the allocation of responsibility of the respective bodies in regard to the proposed stormwater drainage about to be carried out by the Newmarket Borough Council. The Education Board wrote stating that •a- school was being established at St. Alban's Hall and requesting the council to extend the sewer to the boundary of the property to enable the board to provide proper sanitation for the school. The matter was referred to the Drainage Committee with power to act, the Mayor remarking that it was the duty of the council to do everything possible to provide sanitation for the school.

MOUNT ALBERT. M The Mount Albert Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. T. B. Clay, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. C, H. Page, P. C. Aosell, A. M. Wilson, E. S. Inwood, J. Clark, J. Vickerstaff, H. A. Miles and F. G. H. Harrison. The Navy League wrote asking the council to district with the object of raising money for the reception of Lord Jellicoe. The council decided to open a subscription list at the council chambers for the purpose, and voted £5 to the fund. The Watersiders' Band Committee wrote asking for a donation to the band funds. ~The council decided to donate £3 3s The general manager of New Zealand railways wrote stating that •it was the intention of the Department) to proceed with the erection of a traffic bridge over the railway line at Kingsland, as soon as practicable, provided the local body was prepared tc bear a reasonable share of the cost and liabilities for the work. He mentioned that in consequence of the difficulty of obtaining materials it was not possible to fix a date for the commencement of the work. The Mayor stated that the council had made it clear that it would expect the Department to bear the whole cost of the bridge. It was decided lo make the council's position clear. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday, August 18, to discuss with the consulting engineer, Mr. F. E.
