OBITUARY.

SIR EDWARD POYNTER. Australian'and N.Z. Cable Association. (R«cd. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 26. The death has occurred of Sir Edward Poynter, R.A., the famous artist and designer.

Sir Edward John Poynter, painter, and designer in fresco, mosaic stained-glass and pottery, was born in Paris on March 20, 1836, the son of Ambrose Poynter, architect. He studied art in England and Paris, and exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy in 1861. In 1869, after the exhibition of " Israel in Egypt " and " The Catapult," he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and; in 1876, the year of " Atlanta's Rice," was admitted to full membership. He was for many years director for art in the science and a rib department of the National Art Training School (now the Royal College of Art.), South Kensington. He was also made director of the National Gallery in 1891, and under his administration notable improvements were made. On the death of Sir John Millais, in 1896, he was elected to the presidency of (he Royal Academy, and was knighted. He was made a baronet in 1902. Among Sir Edward Poyn.ter's most notable pictures have been the following:—"lsrael in Egypt," 'The Catanult." " Perseus and Andromeda," "Atalanta's Race," " Nausicn. and her Maidens," "/The Meeting of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba." and numerous portraits and water-colour drawings.

MR. NAT GOULD. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 26. The death has occurred of Mr. Nat Gould, the well-known sporting novelist.

While the name of Nat Gould, the wellknown writer of sporting fiiction of the lighter type, is generally associated with Australia, he was a Lancashireman, baving been born in Manchester in December, 1857. He was resident for a number of years in Australia, and travelled the Commonwealth extensively. He was the writer of about 130 novels in all.
