LORD JELLICOE'S VISIT.
COST OF ENTERTAINMENTS. DISCUSSION IN CHIUSTCHURCH. [BY TELEGRAPH. press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. At a meeting of the City Council tonight the Finance Committee recommended that a £ for £ subsidy be paid on. all contributions from local bodies in North Canterbury for entertainment during the visit of Lord Jellicoe, conditionally on the council's share not exceeding £250. Some of the Labour members of the council objected to such expenditure, statin*? that the entertainment that would be given to the admiral would be beyond the means of workingmen. The Mayor, Dr. Thacker, said the majority of the proposed sum would be expended on entertaining the men of the fleet. The committee's report was adopted.
