WHANGAREI HARBOUR.

PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS. OPPOSITION FROM COUNCIL. "BURDEN TO THE DISTRICT." [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Monday.

Exception was taken this evening by the Whangarei Borough Council to the Whangarei Harbour Board's Vesting and Empowering Bill, 1919, and a resolution objecting to the passing of it was carried by six votes to one. The Mayor said the sum of £150,000 for the purpose of harbour work would be a. serious burden to the borough and j the district generally. In view of the Government's intention to complete the I railway to Auckland, it was not advisable ; at the present time to spend such a large I sum of money on harbour works, which were designed to provide additional passenger facilities, as it was quite probable the railway would eliminate coastal passenger traffic. Further, the principal expenditure under the. Bill was to provide a new port at Kioreroa, which would be in competition with Onerahi, and thus it would render valueless the Government railway at that point.
