USE OF CONDEMNED MEAT.
DISCUSSION IN CHRISTCHURCH. The disposal of carcases of meat condemned at the city abattoirs was the sub ject of a question at the last meeting of the Christchurch City Council. Mr. A. McKellar, replying to the question, said a condemned carcase belonged to the butcher who had bought the stock, and it was usually sold to the By-products Company and converted into manure.
Mr. H. Hunter said he asked the ques-t-ion because of a nasty rumour that a lot of diseased meat went into human consumption in the city. He hoped the city abattoir was safeguarding the health of the citizens. The condemned meat did not all find its way to the By-products Company, and he had heard that some was being used in a raw condition for feeding pigs and poultry. Mr. G. S. Harper said a lot of poor mutton was being brought into consumption in the city, but tin; inspection was made in the proper way, and he was satisfied that all the meat was quite healthy. Replying to a question as to the great increase in the number of sheep slaughtered recently, Mr. Harper said a great deal more mutton was available, and it was going into consumption. The Mayor said all meat that came into the city hid to be officially stamped, and meat condemned was stamped " Condemned" all over the carcase, and it was impossible for any such meat to come into the city and not be recognised. 'Other than as small goods," a conn-1 ci!lor suggested.
