SOLDIERS DECORATED.

PRESENTATION CEREMONY, FIFTY-THREE RECIPIENTS. SPEECH BY THE MINISTER. Tlio medals and decorations won by 53 soldiers in the field were presented by tho Acting-Prime Minister, Sir James Allen, at a public gathering in the Town Hall last evening. The hall was crowded, most of the seating accoramod dim being occupied by returned soldiers md the city territorial and senior cadet, units. The Mayer, Mr. J. H. Gunson, presided, and with him on the platform worn Sir James Allen, Colonel H. R. Potter, C.M.G., officer commanding the district, Colonel R. J. Collins, C.M.(}., and Major H. Peacock. The Mayor said Auckland citizens were always pleased to give what support tby could to Sir James Allen and his officer. The army of New Zealand had beep, a civilian army, drawn from the rank if civilians, and during this time—which 'hey hoped was the final period of the war—the interest of citizens was unabated. He had had the pleasure during the evening of inspecting the senior cadets, and would like to say to them that the presentation of the medals should long be remembered by them. The Minister then presetted the meda's and decorations to the winners or their next of kin, the official description of tho deed for which the honour was awarded being read by Captain E. J. Browning. There were two cases where double awards were made. A large number of tho decorations* were received by next of kin. Each recipient was loudly cheered. At t'ie conclusion, the National Anthem was played by the band of the Third, Auckland, Mounted Rifles, and at the call of Sir James Alien, cheers were given for the winners of the decorations.
