[Dt TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WELLINGTON. Monday.
In a letter to Sir William Fraser, Mr. IT. Holland, ex-Mayor of Christchurch, referring to the visit of tho representatives of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel League to the Otira works, states that tho figures dealing with pay previously supplied by the Minister were found to be und;:r rather than over stated. Instead of the men receiving 13s per day, the lowest paid man in the tunnel received 15s for 6 hours 40 minutes, while men on the Arthur's Pass end, working on tho co-operative contract, had averaged 22s IOJd per day for 8 hours 25 minutes, for a period of eight months. There wore only two shifts on the Arthur's Pass end, and if men were available another shift could bo worked. Mr. Holland says that generally speaking all tie conditions of living were found to be satisfactory^
