MAORI WAR MEMORIAL.
CONTRACT FOR ERECTION.
A contract for the erection and completion of the Victoria league memorial to the men who fell during the Maori wars was signed at a meeting of the executive 'if the Victoria League yesterday. This memorial, which was undertaken by tho Victoria League some time ago, was delayed by the war and by the fact that ;.. sufficiently large block of marble for the i)>destal could not bo obtained. The i>KUe «tatnc which forms the chief feature of the memorial is already compitted, and is jiovt m store. The work in question includes the building of the base, the cutting of inscriptions, eto. Messrs. Parkinson, the contractor, have undertaken to complete this work within seven months at a cost of £995. The statue, which is in bronze—the work of an eminent English together with the marble base, will be a very handsome ornament to the City of Auckland, and a worthy memorial to those who died in order that New Zealand might become a peaceful and civilised country.
