REVIVAL OF MEMORIES About three years ago, says an English writer in the Times, the moving of a household, comp.icatcd hy tne war, wrung irora me a reluctant consent to the sailing of some fO spare goif dubs, the a-ccumuiauon of years, that lived in a cupboard. They wore ; sold by auction' at, a large store unaer the timo-honoured title of "the property of an olncer going- abroad,' and fetched. I think, about £1 in all. 1 was not there tj see- the last of thorn, but even at an average pneo of Is 4d 1 can safely say of most of them that notching- in their lite, wh le in my pos-ee-Mion, became irem like the leaving of it, There was not included ,n the sale, of course, the clubs actually in commission at the time, nor the few which had a genuine asstimenUl value. The 60 had ail been, for good or bad reason, discarded before. Even! so, there seemed something oaiious in thus selling into bondage old servants who had tried to do their best, and I feared at first that I migh; be haunted by them. It was & groundless terror. They never wake me by tie ghostly clanking of their iron heads, and both I end the housemaid who was supposed to dus« the cupboard are equally relieved at being ahut ol them.
This is not to say that a certain measure of amusement has not been lost. It was undeniably entertaining on a wet or idle day to take out those clubs one by one and waggle them. Very occasionally I used to find that a, Ion? rest had dono a Ciuo -or possibly its master—food; it was taken oat of the reserve with excellent results, rloinetimes an inspiration would lead to a prosperous union of the head of one club to tie shaft of another. Two simultaneous divorcee were even known) to produce two now and happy marriages. But this was exceedingly rare, and en the whole the disinterred clubs proved not more successful than dugouts usually are. Even to waggle them was generally to awaken painful memories. So many of them, when first bought, had given rise to insane hopes, flattering only to deceive. This was particularly true to the legion of putters, for it is well known that he who is most palpably condemned alike by method and temperament to fail upon the green can yet on occasions perform miracles with a new club. There were also several cleeks, proverbially the most coy and uncertain of clubs, that it was bitter to contemplate. la each case the club had done well as long as the original shaft endured; but the sWt had been gradually bent into a hoop or lost its steely quality and so been discarded, and then the best of clubm&kers had been unable to find a successor to it. This happena so often that I am driven to the conclusion that the cleckhoad is hopelessly and instinctively monogamous.
There were other clubs there that it would have been pleasant to look at if only in bygone days J had had the sense to leave well alone. They were clearly bad clubs, but they had been squired when somo change was imjieratively needed and for the moment they had restored vanished courage; but I had flown in the fate of obvious facts and persevered with them just too lons, When Harry Vardon won his first champions'aip at Muirfield he putted, on playing off tie tie against Taylor, with a derelict tloek that had suddenly struck his fancy the day before in a ciubmaker's shop at North Berwick. 1 believe that ho has resolutely declined to touch it again, realising that it had done its work. . To take another illustration/ from humbler life, there was in that cupboard of mine probably the worst iron putter that ever to' forged. It was ponderous, ill-balanced, and hideous to behold. I bought it in utter desperation, just before a tournament, because it waa the only one in the shoo. Yet it achieved prodigies of skill upon the green. and, although driving execrably and approaching timidly, I won the tournament. If ever there was a time to stop 1 suppose that was it; but the temptation was great, and indeed, when it is considered how much putting is a matter of , confidence, there were perhaps extenuating circumstances. The inevitable crash followed. Had I boon wise J might now be regarding tffectionataly that putter as one who had stepped nobly into the. breach. As it is, it has, gone, . and I derive a malignant joy from imagining the purchaser or his assigns trying vainly to put with it On a different plane are those ancient clubs which have, in their day, been really good ones and not merely fortuitous, begotten of a temporary confidence, whose only defect now is old age. The one or two such that I had escaped the hanunor and are still, cherished, in particular a lofting iron of curious shape, grown thin and light with years of cleaning. Nothing that it may do or that I, thrown, lack of skill, may do with it can matter now. The great Tom Cribb, after finally defeating Molyneaux, went unchallenged for 10 years. At the end of that time it was decided that he n£ed fight no more, and should be entitled champion for the rest of his life. That, is the .way to treat our old friends whose reputations are, though for us alone, established- Even as Tom emerged from his retirement to spar before the .Emperor of Russia., so on some private festival, I reverently take out my old iron for a little gentle exercise in the garden. I am not in the least afraid lest I pitch my ball into, instead o f over, a flower bed, for the iron's place is assured. It is always a champion in its master's heart. BOWLING. INTER-CLUB MATCHES.
