OLD COLONIST'S DEATH.
CAPTAIN WILLIAM NEWLASD.
Captain William New land, a Ten' old colonist of New Zealand, died in New Plymouth recently. Captain Newlar-.d arrived in Taranaki with his parents in the birt|w Amelia Thompson in 1841. He enlisted in the Colonial Forces at the beginning of the Maori War, and remained on active) sorvi:o until the termination of hostilities. Daring the wars on the East and Wect Coasts of the North Island, Captain Newland wag placed in command of cavalry, and did yeoman service in the bush warfaro of the early sixties. He assisted in the pursuit of Te Kuiti in the Urewen Country under Sir George Whit-more, ami was mentioned in despatches at Okotuka and other engagements. He had lived a life of retirement during the last few years.
