GUNS AMONG Till- PHEASANTS.
BIRDS REPORTED NUMEROUS.
Excellent weather prevailed for Uio opening of the shooting season-in the Tanti'tarunui district. Numerous parties of local enthusiasts went out, but only moderate succese liaMO far been reported. Ono party of three secured nine pheasants in the vicinity of Taringaniohu, and ducks arc believed to be plentiful on the lakes in this vicinity. Another party left for Kawhia lakes, where pheasants and ducks arc believed to be very numerous. Many licenses have been issued in tho district.
The policy of Mao Auckland Acclimatisation Society, in distributing pheasants to the sub-societies in the district for liberation, is proving a great success. During the past two years-upwards of 100 birds have been liberated by (the Papakura subsooicty. and the prospects for a pood shooting season are very bright. On the opening morning of the Reason two sportsmen secured seven brace of pheasants, and a number of California)! quail. They also saw a great number of young hen birds. Thoso indications point to the fact that in the vicinity of Auckland there should be good shocking for some years to como. In spite of the fact that tho sale of licenses by the Papakura Society has trebled this year a good many " carriers " of puns aro reported to be in evidence, and the local society has therefore secured the services of an additional outside ranger.
