OBITUARY.
MR. H. DAVIDSON. Mr. H. Davidson, formerly chief am countant of the Railway Department, died at Christchnrch on Good Friday. Mr. Davidson, who was about 70 years of ago, I came to New Zealand about 1870, having had railway experience in England. He joined the Railways Department as a stationmaster, and for some time was in charge of a Canterbury station. Ho then joined the accountants' branch as a clerk, and there worked himself up to the position of chief clerk, which he filled for a number of yoars under Mr. A. C. Fyfe. When Mr. Fyfe retired, Mr. Davidson became chief accountant, and occupied the position for about 10 years. Ho retired about five years ago. MR. HENRY P. HORNIBROOK, Mr. Henry P. Hornibrook, well known) in the mining industry, died at Ewington Avenue, Mount Eden, on Sunday at (ha i age of 69. The deceased, who was a son of Dr. Hornibrook, of Belfast, arrived ia Auckland over fifty years ago, In the early days of the Ooromandel field be managed the Bismarck, of which he was part owner.. Later he managed the Kapai-Ver-I mont mine. Later ho-vheaded a nraipecvi ing e xpedition to Abyssinia on behalf of I a London syndicate. Gold was not found, ' but a field of iron ore was located. He had recently received from tie Italian Gov- ' ernment a communication inquiring if ha I was prepared to return to If at field after ' the waj. Mr. Hornibrook was a raomber I of the board of examiners of mine and , battery managers, and had been a mem- | ber of the Thames Licensing Committee ! and the Coromandel County Council Hq 1 is survived by a widow and family. EARLY COLONIST'S DEATH. A resident of 60 years' standing, Mrtv ' Jane Rhodes, died last week at the resi* dence of her daughter, Mrs. F. Walker, . Merivalo Avenue, Epsom. Mrs. Rhodes, who was 98 years of age, was a native of Liverpool. She had a vivid memory of Auckland of the early days, and used to tell oj how she was once" lost in the tea-tree in what is now Newton. She passed through many hardships during the war. Mrs. Rhodes is survived by a"family of four, the eldest of whom is 77 years of age and the youngest 57 years. There are 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grand* children.
